BALLET, GRADES 1–3
10-, 11- and 12-year-olds
In the classes, the students practice the ballet technique both at the barre and on the centre floor. At the end of the class, the students will also perform exercises on pointe shoes. In addition to improving turnouts, which is an essential part of ballet technique, the classes enhance the students’ balance, as well as skipping and turning techniques. As regards dance knowledge and body maintenance, the classes build on the knowledge acquired in the basics of art dance class. Small dance arrangements and performance training are an important part of ballet classes. The fine motor skills, beautiful posture, dancing skills, and confidence on the stage are strengthened.
The first ballet grade students have two 75-minute dance classes, the second ballet grade students have two 90-minute dance classes, and the third ballet grade students have three 90-minute dance classes a week. See the timetable for the times of the dance class.
BALLET, GRADES 4–7
In the upper ballet grades, the students already have good concentration skills and are able to work systematically. In the upper grades, the students continue to work on their skipping, turning, and toe techniques. Various kinds of repertoire exercises, where the students learn and practise dances for performing, are part of the weekly programme. During the classes, the students’ skills at viewing and analysing dancing and dance performances are also developed. The students learn to recognise and emphasise their strengths in dancing.
BALLET FOR TEENS
Ballet for teens is suited to young people wishing to start dancing by first learning ballet. Ballet for teens is also a beneficial and excellent addition to those whose main focus is in contemporary dance, jazz dance, show jazz, or street styles. The first ballet for teens group is aimed at students who have no previous experience in ballet and the second ballet for teens group is aimed at students who have danced ballet for one or two years.
Character dances are principally foreign, fast-tempo, and catchy folk dances adapted to the stage. The dance style has been influenced by e.g. Eastern European, Spanish, and Italian folk dances.
In the character dance classes, the students will practise the dance technique both at the barre and on the centre floor, but the main focus is on learning dances. Shoes are used in the class. In addition to coordination, character dance develops e.g. rhythmic skills and dance expression. The classes are suited to students who have trained ballet for at least one year.
Character dance has three level groups: character dance 1 is aimed at beginners, character dance two is aimed at students who have trained character dance for at least one year, and character dance three is aimed at students who have trained character dance for at least two years.
